How to measure for a harness that never chafes

Avoid shoulder restriction and armpit irritation by following our simple 3-point measurement guide before your next hike.

Dog on a walk

Start with the right tools

Use a soft measuring tape and keep it snug against your dog’s coat without pulling it tight. If you do not have a flexible tape, use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler.

Take three measurements

Measure around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. Then measure the lower neck where a collar naturally rests, and finally note your dog’s weight as a cross-check against the harness size chart.

Write down each measurement and compare it with the specific sizing guide for the harness you are considering. Sizes can vary between designs and brands.

Check the fit before a long walk

Once the harness is on, check that you can slide two fingers comfortably beneath each strap. The straps should stay clear of the throat and should not rub behind the front legs.

Let your dog walk around indoors and watch for rubbing, restricted movement, or a harness that shifts or slips. Adjust the straps or try another size before heading out.
