The road-trip checklist for stress-free car rides

From motion sickness prevention to backseat safety: practical steps to prepare your pet for a long drive.

Plan a comfortable journey

Build up to longer drives with short, calm trips. Keep the car well ventilated and plan regular stops so your dog can stretch, drink water, and take a toilet break.

If your pet is prone to travel sickness or anxiety, ask your veterinarian for advice before you travel. Do not give medication unless it has been recommended for your pet.

Secure your dog for every drive

Use a suitable, well-fitted car harness or a secured travel crate. Keep your dog out of the front seat and never allow them to ride unrestrained in the car.

Introduce any restraint at home first, then use it on a few short journeys so it becomes familiar before your trip.

Pack the essentials

Bring fresh water, a bowl, your dog’s usual food, lead, waste bags, any prescribed medication, and a familiar blanket or toy. Keep identification and your veterinarian’s contact details with you.

Never leave a pet alone in a parked car. Temperatures can become dangerous quickly, even when the weather outside feels mild.
